On April 25th, the Defense Information Systems Agency announced a new upgrade to DOD’s enterprise network known as the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN). The new upgrade, named the Next Generation Optical Transport, will provide a huge bandwidth boost to the network, from 10 GB per second to 100 GB per second, as well as provide “improved infrastructure resiliency, service delivery node resiliency, encryption, and transitions critical legacy components to an internet protocol-based Ethernet infrastructure.”
DISA tied to the effort, to be completed in Fiscal Year 2019, to DISA’s major goal known as the Joint Information Environment (JIE). JIE has come up in our previous coverage of DISA’s Joint Regional Security Stack (JRSS) roll-out, as well as the new, $8 billion Defense Enterprise Office Solution (DEOS) cloud vehicle currently in the planning stages.
The implementation of the upgrade, and whether DISA will use a new contract vehicle or an existing contract such as one of the Global Information Grid Services Management (GSM) contracts used to complete other JIE projects, is not known at this time. According to DISA, “the resulting robust optical infrastructure will include critical elements such as additional fiber paths and optical equipment for combatant commands.” In the midst of a number of DOD efforts to bolster cloud capabilities, DISA’s goal of enabling enterprise data center access to the 100 GB per second Next Generation Optical Transport network is likely to be an important step in improving DOD cloud access.
